Accidentally biting or injuring your tongue can be quite an inconvenience, and it can actually be pretty painful. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help your tongue and dull the pain. Our dentist, Dr. Furuta and Dr. Fox, is happy to help you by giving you the tips you need.
The first thing you should do is rinse your mouth. Do not rinse with mouthwash. This will sting the tongue. It’s best to rinse with warm water. This can help wash away any debris in your mouth.
The second thing you should do is try to stop the bleeding. This might be a little difficult because the tongue is so moist and slippery. But it’s best to wrap the tongue in a clean cloth or sterile gauze. Then, apply pressure to the tongue. If you can’t apply pressure with your fingers, push the tongue to the roof of the mouth.
The third thing you should do is reduce the swelling. To do this, it’s best to wrap an ice cube in a washcloth and place it on the injured section of the tongue. Do not place the ice directly on the tongue. It’s important to ice the area 15 minutes at a time.
If you have bitten a piece of your tongue off or if the bleeding won’t subside after 30 minutes, it’s important to see a doctor or visit an Urgent Care facility.
