Cosmetic​ Dentistry Might Need to Restore a Tooth with a Porcelain Crown

Many people with multiple cosmetic imperfections in their smile are interested in restoring the faces of their teeth with dental veneers. However, if you just have a single tooth that needs restoration, Dr. Furuta and Dr. Fox might recommend a porcelain dental crown. This is even more likely to be the case if the tooth has an existing cavity or a previous filling. In these cases, there might not be enough original structure left to secure a dental veneer.

The porcelain crown will be a near-perfect replica of the tooth enamel layer that is cast from a special dental-grade porcelain. It can be shaded to match the surrounding teeth.

To install a porcelain crown, your dentist will remove the entirety of the tooth’s enamel layer. This leaves behind a post-like abutment that encases the pulp and root of the tooth.

Your dentist will then cast a detailed impression of the area, which will be sent out to our professional dental lab. It will serve as a guide while the technicians work to prepare the porcelain crown. In the interim, your dentist will secure a temporary crown over the abutment to protect it.

When your new crown is ready, we will call you back in to have it installed. The temporary crown will be removed and your porcelain crown will be cemented onto the abutment with a strong dental adhesive.
